To detect and use an external input, the Galaxy S needs to see about 1600 ohms impedance between the microphone and ground pins. This will automatically disable the internal mic in the phone. To connect the output from a PC or other audio device into the phones mic input, you'll need to add a 1.6k ohm resistor in series. This is the same procedure that works with an iPhone. APPROVED

The original, correct, and original industry standardized pinout puts ground on the sleeve and mic on ring2. http://www.omtp.org/OMTP_Local_Connectivity_Wired_Analogue_Audio_v1_0.pdf nokia refers to the apple bastardized pinout as American Headset Jack (AHJ). Unfortunately, some manufacturers imitate apples malfeasance. Even the CTIA appears to have sold its soul to the devil. Fairchild makes a chip to juggle the two pinouts. http://www.fairchildsemi.com/pf/FS/FSA8049.html Sleeve ground is the logical pinout. When going from 2 pin to three pins, the added pin was ring1. When going from three to 4, the added contact was ring1, not the sleeve that had always been there for decades. A flawed logical argument can be made for the apple pinout in that some plastic TRS jacks put the ground contact approximately where ring2 is on TRRS jack. However, others might short ring2 and sleeve and metal jacks had a sleeve that physically connects to case ground. In addition a metal plug has a metal face that is part of the shield and can short to the sleeve contact. Both of these indicate that sleeve must logically be ground. On waterproof TRRS connectors( used on yeasu radios), a metal screw in section and o-ring replace the face of the plug - again sleeve must be ground. No matter how many manufacturers follow apples lead, like lemmings into the sea, it will always be a bastardized pinout. DVD players and camcorders usually used sleeve as ground; when they didn't there was often additional evidence the designer was smoking crack like putting ground on ring1 or reversing or even moving right and left audio. It is also recommended practice today to always use 4 pin jacks for stereo headphones without mics and tie both sleeve and ring2 to ground. This way a stereo headphone, original standard headset, or apple bastardized headset will all work as a headphones. Apple has a long history of gratuitous incompatibility with industry standards. - whitisAPPROVED
