When a controller button is pressed, its associated signal is asserted low (grounded) to result in movement, fire, jump, etc. For the Sega Master System controllers, each button is connected to its own signal trace.
Sega Genesis/MegaDrive controllers differ electrically, utilizing a select signal on pin 7 for multiplexing input data.
